Yup, I agree. Choose which way you feel that you will have the most enjoyment. I chose Blues. During Blues I first picked songs that would not overwhelm me. Then I gradually picked songs that were harder but pertained to the Blues just to learn how the masters play. Now I am picking any kind of song that I used to listen to back in the day and always wanted to play. You will be surprised what songs are doable even during your beginning phase.
One final thing- I suggest that you pick songs that you are very familiar with. This way you know how it's suppose to sound. It makes it easier for your ear in the beginning.
One more "final" thing- As soon as you go through parts of the song and you listen and mimic the instructor, try to play that portion with the soundtrack. This is the best way to learn how music works because you are forced to play in time. Have fun. I know I am.
