TIme signature difficulty

When the time signature is 4 ie., 4/4. do I have to play 4 quarters 4 times?

Hi,

In 4/4 time there are 4 beats to the bar. You count 1,2,3,4....1,2,3,4. etc.

You can play 1 whole note and and make it last 4 beats

You can play 2 half notes 1,2,....1,2 making 4 beats to the bar.

You can play 4 quarter notes....1,2,3,4. beats to the bar.

You can play 8 1/8 notes 1,2,..3,4...5,6,..7,8. to the bar

You can play 16 1/16 notes 1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4... to the bar.

So yes, you can play 4 quarter notes 4 times. That will be 1bar.

Hi again,

Just as an afterthought, it might help you understand a little more if you go on the internet and type in 'Basic music theory for beginners' that will give you a better understanding about time signatures, music notation and bars,etc.

Every little helps.
