I'm also from England and have a similar situation(but do have a guitar). I would really recommend getting some some structure into what yow want to do. I try and balance learinng songs(the fun bit) with improving technique and theory. I do this by mapping out what I want from the Guitar Tricks site (which they pretty much do for you if you check it out). I find the GT site is really good on all counts and I can't recommend this site highly enough. I also have tuition once a month with a registered guitar instructor to keep me on track and to identify and clarify issues I have.
