Finger tips on my left hand very tender after practicing. Wish I could speed up the callous building process.

Stay with it. The callouses will come. I have been at it about 5 weeks and am getting starting to get some good callouses on my fingertips. I found an added benefit of the harder finger tips is the notes are easier to hit cleanly.
