That's hard to say without more information. Does the book have any instructions on how to apply the patterns? What book is it?

Those patterns are similar. So it could go either way. I'd look for more info in the book itself.

[quote=quinn31st]I also notice the the tab usually below the music staff is just the melody and the notation is again the individual notes of the melody for lead guitar (I'm assuming)?

Yes, that's how easy guitar books are sometimes structured. Can you post an image as an example?

Any suggestions or insight using these style of books would be appreciated.

It depends on your skill level & goals (what songs you want to play). I'd encourage you also to look into authentic versions of songs you like in order to get the precise notation of what the guitar is doing.

Hope that helps!

The example I have provided is Act Naturally, as you can see most of these "Easy Guitar Books" give a suggested Strum pattern and pick pattern. While the melody of the song is notated with single notes. If one was to attempt to play the melody via strumming I would assume it wouldn't sound correct.

Thank you for your prior response.

Both the strum & pick pattern would apply to the chords. And further, you'd have to adjust that straight 1/8 strum to a swing rhythm due to the indication at the top to make it an 1/8th note swing triplet feel.

But you are correct that neither apply to the melody. That's intended to be sung by voice. You could play the melody on guitar, after all standard notation contains the info: the notes & the rhythms to use. I find that good practice for sight reading & general skill building. But you'd be picking one note at a time.

If you did play the single note melody you'd have to have another guitarist to strum the chords for accompaniment. Or you have to combine them into a chord melody version. But that's a whole different can of worms. :)[br][br]Hope this helps! Have fun with that song!
