Yes, they're when you pick and hit the string with the side of your thumb simultanously,or,rather are already resting the side of your thumb on the string..a bit tricky,but they create a note (I beleive) one octave higher than fretted .Try picking around the neck pickup and playing at ,around, the 12th fret. Just "developing" these myself..initially mine came from sloppy technique!
