Have been a Guitar Tricks subscriber, but had to stop for a few months and now just getting back into it. I am trying to figure out a good way to practice within Guitar Tricks. I can play all basic chords and also barre chords however, I am unsure how to schedule my practice to get better. Being that I am 65 this coming March, I have a lot of time to practice however, I seem to get mixed up on WHAT to practice. I am working on Blues 1 but I cannot spend a full hour just going through Blues lessons. How can I set aside time to practice a few songs, complete finger exercises, and then also work my way through Blues 1. Any help might get me on track. Thanks

The vast majority of practice time for beginners should just be building mechanical skills. So, if you are working through the Blues 1 course, then you should practice playing the materials in the current tutorial for half your playing time.

The other half should be learning songs. Learn songs that mostly use the basic skills you already have. If there is something a little beyond you, then work on it while working on the song, or just skip that hard part & replace it with an easy section until you can get it.

Playing chords, riffs, music in time that results in a song is the end goal. So, you should always be working toward it!

If you an hour to practice, then split the hour between those two main goals. If you have more time, then split that longer time!

If you are having fun with a song, then just keep on that for the whole practice session. If you need to work on particular part of the blues course in order to get a skill down that you need for a song, then it's okay to just focus on the blues course material practice for a daily session.

But overall, you should be:

1. Building, refining your playing skills.
2. Learning songs.

Hope this helps! Please ask more if necessary! Have fun & best of success! ZZSmilieZZ

Thanks Chris, that does help. I think what I will probably do is assigne some time to the lessons on Blues 1, and a son, then also go back into fundamentals 1 and 2 for a month or so. Thanks
