For beginners, is it okay to watch the fingers fret? I am practicing my fretting using the "spider" moves, and being only a week into learning, I cannot do it without looking at my fingers.

Any thoughts on this?

Looking is never a problem. Even masters need to take a look once in a while, they just find a way to make it look cool. ZZWinkZZ

Just be sure that when you lok and hopw your fretting the notes and chords that you're not tilting the guitar towards your face (upward) when you actually play notes. Many people as beginners want to see the note or chord and it helps to look at your fretboard. Not a problem per se but make sure you return the guitar to the proper ergonomic position whan you actuall play.

If you aren't tilting the guitar up but just looking down at the neck, that's no problem at all. I'd go so far as to say that's normal. It's kind of a myth to me that you have to look away from your instrument. If you watch many master players in jazz and other disciplines, they almost always are looking at their guitar.

Yes, the tilting of the guitar toward you can be a big problem because it will make it harder to fret the notes. An easy way to force yourself not to tilt the guitar toward you is to play your guitar standing up.

I can play some things without looking, with with some intricate things I need to look down. I approach it like reading in front of people...look up occasionally to maintain a connection with your audience.
