While I haven't listened to Savatage yet, I learned just last night that Paul O'Neill pulled several members of the band to create Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In fact TSOs first album was apparently delayed for two years in order to re-establish Savatage after the death of guitarist Criss Oliva.

Thats right. I think John Oliva does some writing for TSO, but savatage is quit a bit different from TSO. Check them out.

Listened to some YouTube videos last night. Could definitely hear their influence in TSO. What album would you recommend for a new listener?

You also want to check out Doctor Butcher (not to be confused with the hip-hop artist of the same name). It is a disc Jon Oliva and Chris Caffery did after Chris Oliva died. Caffery did a fantastic job of guitar riffing.

I think it was kind of a catharsis of Jon as the lyrics are pretty aggressive and dark-ish. However, it is awesome. Whenever I'm in a pretty cranky place, I give this a listen and it lets me get my aggression out. Was a great catharsis for me when I lost someone.

I believe Dead Winter Dead was the album that spun into TSO. Heard about Savatage reading some of Alex Skolnicks articles in Guitar World (?) magazine. He was with them as well as Testament, LOG, and think he plays or played on the TSO Christmas tour. TSO is a VERY hard act to follow in my opinion...

Savatage is a great band with high quality output from '83-'87 (well maybe not Fight for the Rock), with The Hall of the Mountain King being a fan favorite. Criss Oliva was a great guitarist.
