As a beginner so far I have learned to make some chords ring clear and can finally play and sing along with Horse With No Name, that took two months. Any way there is a place called sweet water in Indiana that has a big sale every year. If i am better and still playing I think I will purchase a new guitar. What guitars should I pick up and play while i am there. Does anyone have advice. Right now I know I want to check out a baby Taylor and a Martin d28 and Martin d35.

Get down to the store when the sale is on and try out lots of them . The big names like Taylor and Martin certainly have a good tone , but do they feel comfortable to you? Takamine and seagull are also good . Even if you give them a pain in the butt at the store , its your money

Good advice and that's just what I'm going to do. On June 17th and 18th Sweetwater is having their Gear fest event and I will be there trying out lots of guitars. That's what I'm asking is there any I should make a point of trying out. This is the fourth largest guitar store in the world so lots of inventory.

I would target the following brands:

- Taylor
- Martin
- Takamine
- Breedlove
- Epiphone
- Seagull

If you can play anything that those companies make I'd recommend at least trying them. They all have pretty solid mid-price models as well.

Hey Tagalog

How did it go?

Sorry to have missed this thread earlier. Always better to buy in store and spend as much time trying them out as you'd like, ideally in a private audition room so that you can hear the guitar.

1. Know your budget
2. Don't be afraid to choose with your eyes
3. Be brave to decline a guitar that you love the look of but just doesn't click
(this is starting to sound like relationship advice)
4. Pay attention to how the neck feels, sharp fret edges, the action, intonation up and down the neck
5. Sweatwater seem like good guys, tell them your playing style, budget, and ideas and ask them for some conservative and left-field recommendations. A good sales person will listen to what you want, never speak down to you, and give you sufficient time to make your choice. If they're really good, and your budget covers Taylors and Martins, then they'll be good with coffee etc.
6. Enjoy the day out! I schedule a whole day to find a new guitar. Useful to take a break for lunch before going back and taking your top picks for a second date!

I own a Martin D15M - beautifully balanced sound

Try different wood combinations - all mahogany has a different sound to spruce/rosewood, cedar tops make a difference.

If your budget stretches to d28 and d35 you've got an wide-range of beautiful possibilities.

Let us know what you pick!

Dude, there are $2,000 between a Big Baby Taylor and the Martins you mentioned. The Martin D35 is my ideal--but I've never been able to plunk that much on a guitar. If you can you'll never regret it. Actually I like the HD-35 a little better because of the herringbone around the edges but it's more than $2,500.

I had the Big Baby Taylor at one time. For a while it was terrific. Then the neck warped beyond the ability of the truss rod to get it back in shape. I therefore don't recommend them. I had a cheap Mexican Martin--well , if you call $899 cheap. I loved it too until I didn't. I had an Aria AD-80 which was a Martin D41 copy. That was excellent and often beat most guitars in an A/B comparison. But I stupidly wanted electronics and sold it. I got a Taylor 210 which I grew out of love with because it was laminate. Other folks have mentioned good brands. It all depends on your budget. If you could afford a Martin D35 then you could afford a serious Taylor and not the Big Baby which is relative junk on the Taylor list. You could get something in the 400 or maybe even 500 series. Those are REAL guitars.
