I'm a beginner. Have been practising for about a month and am getting a sore left wrist. Any suggestions. Ronnie

Congratulations on a month of success.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing wrist pain... please know that it is common.

I feel that as you go down this road its important to distinguish between joint pain and muscle pain. Muscle pain is unavoidable... but with stretching and development, is just part of the road to success. Joint pain - when you sense it - means its time to immediately stop - maybe for the day - Ive been at it for almost 3 decades and it still creeps up on me - however - use these precautionary measures:

The trick to getting good at anything... is making it easy ... so... watch yourself in a mirror when you play and see if you are doing that... is your wrist at a strange angle... is your guitar too low or too high? Where is your thumb behind the neck?

If you live where it is cold... as many of us do including me... its VERY important to keep warm... so... you may choose to go and massage your hands and wrists under warm water for a few minutes periodically during your practice times.

For me - if I experience wrist pain... usually in my fretting hand it meanse I didn't really warm up the way I should.... so here's a line of thinking I developed throught the years... "most joint pain is the result of my asking a joint to do something that muscle would do better".... if theres a big stretch in a chord shape... perhaps I should change my arm position...

for example... "C" is sort of an elbow in chord shape... where "G" is an elbow "OUT" chord shape.

And finally - try gently pressing the two bones in your arm together at the base of your wrist to relieve pain - this would help me.

Excellent advice..... if possible...Also have a more experienced guitarist watch you play. They may be able to instantly see improper technique you may not be aware of
