If you're prepared for that have a serious look at a Faded SG,as you said you were considering an SG, switchgear and inlay/finish work maybe dodgy on some Gibsons, but the pickups and necks are some of the best out there.If you buy one,buy it locally if the price isn't too bad.
That'll cost you $500(£350) or so,they're over £650 ($1000) when we do get them here.

Oh...my price range is higher than that. I'd go for the Gibson SG Standard, if i went SG.
