proper finger use

I noticed that the instructor teaching the C major scale in the 3 position using his 1,2,4 fingers. is it preferred to use the index and middle to stretch a whole step over the third and pinky stretching a whole step

Sometimes finger placement is determined by the chord you are coming from or going to.
You can ask the instructor who is teaching the lesson.. Just go to their forum.
