Hi,

I subscribed yesterday because I purchased my first guitar on Friday, a Squire Strat, and I'm really interested in learning about guitar parts and modding, and how to tell a good guitar from average.

Where is a good place to start learning about guitar specifics so I can look at a guitar and tell if it is really nice or not? What are some of the most important things I would need to know?

Thanks for the help!

The first bit of advice i would give is take the guitar to a tech and have it set up properly, he/she will also be able to help you understand the instrument parts better and make it play the best it can.

fuzzb0x gave you a good tip on having a set up done..Poor playability could turn you off to learning. Definitely made it harder to enjoy.
1 Start with core lesson Fundamentals 1.. How to select guitar is here..
2 Get a tuner. The newer clip on styles are great in my book.
If the guitar is a brand new purchase the dealer may set it up for free..
You may want to get some lesson under you belt and decide what type of music you are aiming to learn.
To me, a lot about guitar is the feel.. So learn some chord and scales, a few easy songs and then think about what you want out of a guitar.
Good luck on your guitar quest..
