My husband bought me a 12 string Penco many years ago. I only have 6 strings on it now, because I am relearning. I put it aside for many years, but now that I am retired, I have more time. My question is simply, is this a decent guitar? The guy at my local shop said it is, "okay." Of course, it has sentimental value, and is very attractive; but I am curious about the quality. It is a beautiful cream color with a "mottled" finish. Any opinions?

I owned a Penco Martin copy years back and it was a great guitar. While not thought highly of at the time, mid 1970s Japanese guitars have a much better reputation now. I believe the company that made the Penco essentially became Ibanez.

In my opinion, I'd get all the strings back on it. It may take it from OKAY to FANTASTIC. I assume okay meant that it would be playable.
In the meantime do some research. I was surprised what I found just glancing through a few topic.
Good luck with it..
