never too old to learn, i hope!

Hi all! I'm new here - just started the Core lessons today. Have been wanting to get back to guitar for years (played some in high school a LONG time ago), but had to take care of other people's needs first. Promised myself I would take the time once my daughter was in college. Just returned from setting her up at school last night & here I am. I took advantage of GT's free guitar with a year of full access offer. Excited to try this!

I too am just starting. I did not have any children, but if I did, they would be college age, like yours. That's puts us in the same age bracket, more or less.
I enjoy the freedom of expression when I play. There is no expectation of greatness, just pure joyful noise. I'm not sure you would call it music just yet.
Anyway, I am having fun and I hope you are also. Just wanted you to know that you're not alone.

I've been playing over 2 years. Unfortunately I did not start here. I know most of the basic chords (A C D E F G) yes B is missing. I just started with that one. It's making me really work for it.
I am having fun with "Sweet Home Alabama," but I cannot play with the background just yet.
Where are you at on this fun journey??

Woohoo - I've got A, C, & E down well. Hope I can remember them when they start adding more... Is anyone else just starting with the core lessons?

I'm older then dirt but I played on and off for a long time.I stopped when Dad died way to young in 1984.
I started again about a year ago
Try 3 hours a day and that finger picking Linda Mc Kormick teaches makes many songs sounds so much better.

Doesn't take that long

Awesome!; I'm doing the same. Son now through high school... it's been a long LONG road as a single dad trying to raise a kid and have a career... the blues calls me to this guitar to learn to play it...
Good luck and well wishes gwg! !

The gig went really well, we messed up a little on a couple of songs but that was just a bit of nerves, other than that it was great.
We ended up with about 40 people there in the end which was fine, it's amazing how different people hear things in a different way, some said "Ticket To Ride" was our weakest song and some said it was one of the best? everyone thought "Bad Moon Rising was our best one, but then we've been learning that one for a while now, we only started learning "It's My Life" three weeks ago as we decided to give it a shot and everyone said it was really good.
The kids loved it once they got over their nerves, a couple of them were nearly physicly sick, but they were all buzzing by the end, they all can't wait until December now, I am in the process of trying to get a couple of gigs at their schools also, we are going to drop a few of the older songs and stick some up to date ones in. just to vary it a little.
Unfortunately the video didn't work, for what reason I don't know, I haven't seen the person who was supposed to turn it on since, either they thought they had or they forgot, someone has got some bits on their phone but they said it was white a lot of the time due to the stage lighting, if I manage to get anything uploaded I'll put the link up here.

You are definately not alone! Took early retirement and re-ignited the old Passion for playing. Loving every minute!
What kind of G do you you have, GW?
Hey Bob - How old IS dirt? I'm up there myself. I'm old enough to get a free Beach pass and a discount at some stores and restaurants, although I don' t go for the early-bird special yet!

Hey guys! Thanks for all your replies. It's great to know there are more of us out there. I'm definitely seeing progress (though I won't be asked to join a band anytime soon.) Working on the core lessons & Lisa's finger picking, as suggested. I can just about play my first real song - Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces" taught by Caren. Woohoo! Rock on, everyone.

No better place to learn. March of 2013 I picked up a guitar for the first time....and signed up for this site same day. I give all credit to this site to what I know today.
3 things to remember that I make sure I do:
1. Practice
2. Practice
3. Practice

Hi everyone I'm 56 now and I have been "playing" for almost 2 years now. Lately I've been trying to concentrate on learning to play one song all the way through. Guitar tricks has helped immensely, where I get stuck trying to figure out certain parts of a song. I feel like my progress has been directly related to my time practicing. I've heard it said that learning to play guitar is definitely not a linear process. I'm in no hurry, I have the rest of my life to learn.

I am sure I will be "at least" twice as old as everyone else ( except my duet partner) However so what! Regardless of skill level learning an instrument ( language etc) is good for the mind
I have a music recital coming up and will do two duets out of the Berklee book. However,my voice teacher wants me to do a song. Looks like it will Let it Be as arraigned by Anders, with my flavor ( I use a thumb pick and play the lead)if it happens.

I too have been away from my guitar for many years. There always seemed to be something in the way. This time I plan on things to be different. I was surfing the net for a good site to use to get my skills back and came upon GuitarTricks. I am excited to get started.
