What is the best way to play the G chord? I have seen several variations on how it is played and was wondering if one is better then another for chord transition, or does it not really matter as long as you've got it down?

There are quite a number of ways to play a G chord. I think I could come up with 7 or 8 ways, perhaps more.

I would say it depends on the piece you are playing...

Consider the chord before and after the G - will each of the chords be comfortably reachable while playing the piece
Sometimes you want to add an embellishment to the chord and will need a free finger or two to do so.
Perhaps you are trying to include some melody notes in the song that may be more accessible from a specific grip or position.

Bottom line IMHO there is no one single best way to play any chord. In fact, even for the same chord grip you may wish to use different fingers.

Good luck. Keep at it. I'm sure you will learn many chords and variations as you progress.
