The Fender Standard is probably what I would go for. However I have seen that you can get Fender by Squier a lot cheaper. Are these any good?
Fender or Squier Telecaster
I currently have an Epiphone Les Paul Special II but I have suddenly aquired the urge to get a Telecaster. There are so many different types though that I'm somewhat overwhelmed by the choice!

I just went and got a Fender Telecaster Standard in the end. It's very nice! The fretboard is a lot larger than I was expecting. Love the sound it makes.

How is the Standard Telecaster a year on? I'm saving to get one in Lake Placid Blue? Is it a keeper, or do you feel the need to get an a American Standard? I've played a few, and they seem very nice.
Thanks,
David

I've played both (owned the American Tele). Personally, I'd spring for the American. Just a fantastic instrument.

While the Squier Tele is an okay starter, and the American's are a bit pricey, what about splitting the difference and get your hands on a Mexican Tele? I have an American and a Mexican and once you get them both set up properly, you will have a hard time recognizing the difference.
Sam Ash (and others) has the current Mexican Tele models starting at under $500.

If the price tag is an issue with an american tele have a look at the squier vintage modified telecaster.
The vintage modified range is superb, highly recomended.

Have Gibson SG and Epi LP so I was in the mood for a Telecaster and researched, read blogs went guitar shops and played squires, American and Mexican ones in different models and to tell the truth I just couldn't justify the price on a American and even tho some of the squires played great I just wanted that fender on the head stock so I compromised and found a used black MIM standard Fender telecaster used in great condition with case for $250. Put new strings on and had buddy of mine check the action and lower a little. What a great guitar I ended up with for a very reasonable price from being patient and checking craigslist where I ended up buying it.
