OK, here's the deal. I have around $1000 (~700 pounds). What kind of guitar do you guys think I should get, and why?

Second, if I were to not get a new guitar, but rather a new amp (same price range), what do you suggest + why?

You should be able to get an Epiphone Les Paul with that. I've got two and found them to very good. They give off a good sound and have quite a nice finish to them. Not as good as a Gibson though, obviously. But Epiphone is a Gibson owned company, so it's an offical copy.

Check out the Yamaha selection, I got one not too long ago for around 700$ CND and it plays really nice.

Good thin fretboard with a floyd rose.

I also have a gibson so I do approuve Slasher. An Epiphone is great. Gibson's are way too expensive, I got mine used.

Gordon Smith as you're in the UK, they have brass nuts and coil taps as standard - from about £350 to 600 , 600 would get you an LP "Copy", 350 a "junior"- I have never heard anyone say a really bad word against them,in print or in person. Heard 'em up close in local bands...ferkin nice.

KimBob has one ,if he's around to ask....

Yamaha are very good, don't get many bads either (i've got one-OK it's a Pac112-but still nice) .Of course the Venerable SbG and the Aex502 -has great ratings on Harmony central-may have to order it sight unseen -to get a decent price- as they're quite rare.

Do a search on google for the GSs best price.

GS home - http://www.fairplay.demon.co.uk/

Good price example for GS http://www.guitarstrings.co.uk/

Yamies from Germany, top prices http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/artikel-133208.html?ARTTEXTSPRACHE=E&WAEHRUNG=GBP&PRL=GB&sn=d2d1dc18b001fe2453a4d14dbe179993. - that's 270 quid plus 12 p@p Guv....... is mail order too much of a risk? - not decided myself yet.

I haven't seen an Epi recently with good build quality, but they vary greatly.

Justification - most of the above have coil tapped humbuckers which give you a variety of sounds, they are well built mid range instruments which will last, should stay in tune and not give too many problems plus have the ,shorter, Gibson scale, which makes string bending (etc, etc)easier, plus the pickups will lend themselves to most stlyes of music bar XTREME mental.

Mind you I also like the MIM Teles from Germany at about £250 ;)

Have fun in your search.
Accuracy,you say? hmm interesting concept..

Whoa, sorry to seem like I'm from Europe... I live in southeast US. I just posted my price range in pounds because it seems like a lot of people on this forum are from Europe, England especially. I doubt I'll be mail ordering anything from Europe... the postage would be more than the guitar!

Gibson SG's are very nice guitars... i found a few LEFTYS for under 600 so you should find a good deal on a SG STANDARD. Depends on what kind of music you like to play... you can find a decent MESA amp head for around 1000 bucks, ebay is great... the other day i say a MESA combo amp with a PRS CUSTOM 24 for only 1000 bucks, dunno how much it is now...

To tell the truth I really dont know. I'd check out other people's guitars. See how they feel, hear how they sound. I like the feel of my Squier Strat, but I really havn't been around (and dont have enough money) to even think about trying to get a better one after buying the Show 100 for 475. That took a good chunk outta my wallet. lol..
Rock on.
