When I bought my first custom 24 in 1985 , I paid $1250 . now that 85 prs is selling for any were from $3500 and up depending on it's condition.

Yup...take it out and take it for a ride. In the example you cite, the 29 years of appreciation computes to barely more than 3 1/2% per year...not too good of an investment. Playing a fine guitar for all those years yields a much higher, although different, return. ;)
