As the title implies, I've sucked at staying focused. I took a guitar class in middle school and did well at it (I think it was 7th grade). That Christmas, my mom bought me my first acoustic. I looked at her like she had 3 heads. I really didn't have desire to play, but didn't want to hurt her feelings so I lazily plugged along.
After high school, I tried taking lessons. I just always felt like there was no clear cut path and no focus.
About a year ago, I first heard of Rocksmith and got the bug again. I got that and a cheap $100 guitar for Christmas and began playing. I found the software really frustrating due to the lag it has. So, I started looking for online lessons. I joined another website and the problem I had always seemed to center on the same thing. The instructors I was finding were all over the place. This certainly did not help me in my struggle to focus. They may be very musically knowledgeable in their own right but I couldn't see a path.
Now, I am 38. Yesterday, I made a decision to intensely search around for the best online instruction. My searches came down to what seemed to be the 2 top rated sites -- Guitar Tricks and Jamplay. There are really 2 main things that made me go with Guitar Tricks.
1. There was a clear, concise path. Jamplay had many options with many instructors but my fear was this would only perepetuate my typical cause for failure -- lack of focus.
2. The songs! Let's face it, I don't intend to be in a band playing gigs on weekends. I'd just like to pick up and play for family and friends or even surprise people who may not know I can play. I just want to rock out to the songs I have grown up with and love. The extensive song list at Guitar Tricks was the thing that sealed the deal for me.
Anyway, that's me. I'm going to try and take some advice I saw from another poster on these boards -- "If you're too focused on results you'll fall away.. love the process."
