Hey guys,

I've only been playing guitar for 8 months, so I've stayed away from learning any Avenged Sevenfold songs because I figured the lead guitar would be too difficult. But I decided to try learning Beast and the Harlot and I gotta say, it's not as difficult as it sounds. Some of the soloing is actually just straight chromatics. So if you want to learn some songs that sound good/difficult, I would recommend learning just about any of their songs.

Wow, that's pretty awesome for 8 months. You must be a natural.

If there is such a thing. It could be that, or because I've been obsessed since day one. Another thing is I started when I was 25 years old. If I had started when I was 16, I know I wouldn't be this good at 8 months (now 9 months). Now that I'm older, I know how muscle memory works and how much repetition this instrument requires.

But regarding this song, Beast and the Harlot, I have everything up to speed except the solo. It's the second half of the solo that's most challenging. I have it up to about 80% speed, but I started at 40% a month or two ago! But this is by far the fastest thing I'm able to play. But what I realized is that even if something is above your ability level, if you just slow it down and practice it several thousand times, you can speed it up.

I use this program called The Amazing Slow Downer. I really recommend it, as it's helped me gain so much accuracy and speed, because you can slow down any song as much as you want, and even speed it up. So if you have something that's difficult to play, you can literally increase the speed 1% every day. You won't even really notice that you're playing faster.

Points well taken on age and mindset/determination. I'm 46 and I understand what a huge thing that is.
It still sounds like you have the double threat. Natural skill and the drive....awesome!!

That kind of software is great to have btw.

It does kind of seem that way. I hate talking about it because I feel conceited. But I can't help but notice how fast I learn some things compared to my friends. I just wish I would have started when I was younger!

You're only 25 - you're good to go!!! For those of us that are a bit passed the 25 mark by 20 years or more wish we started what we are doing now when we were 25 :-).

The real difference I think when you start as a teenager is that you have a lot more disposable time. I can remember my friend in high school spending his entire summer in his room playing his guitar. Needless to say, he was pretty darn good! I had a summer job and wasn't quite as obsessed as he was, so I didn't advance as quickly.

Once you get older and have to get a job, have a family, and all of the obligations that come along with that, time becomes a scarce.

So I have a lot to look forward to! haha But I am already noticing my free time is dwindling lately. So all my free time has to be devoted to practicing.

Pretty amazing for only 8 months! Took me about a year of playing to be able to play a song like that :)

So how much would you say you practice on a daily basis?

Some days I only have 2 hours to practice. But usually I practice for at least 3 hours.

Any longer than that and I feel it's not very productive; but that's only if you're actually practicing the full 3 hours (you know how easy it is to get distracted). I'm doing a lot of speed exercises so my hand is always sore.
