I am using a .038 pick and tried strumming lighter and just brushing the strings it does not seem to make a difference. I have a Epiphone acoustic guitar. But, I find this is louder than my friends are playing.

that is a really thin pick, man. I myself use a 1 mm when playing rhythm, and an even thicker pick when playing lead. Getting a thicker pick will force you to be more accurate with not only your playing in general, but in how hard or soft you pluck the strings.

When you say you are playing too loud, are you speaking of chords or playing one note at a time? Or both?
