quick answer,you strum between beats. just an exp.first click 1,2,3 click 1,2,3 click ect.first click 1,2,3,4 click 1,2,3,4 click.that should get you started.
start out on a slow tempo till were u can play it without missing a beat.then raise the tempo.theres no sence playing it on a fast tempo while ur trying to keep up with it.good luck.

The best way to start off on a metronome is on 60BPM until you can play comfortably at that speed with quarter notes, 8th notes and 16th notes, and then gradually pick up the speed. Challenge yourself as well.
