How do you keep your fingers from laying across the strings and making them thump?

When I play my guitar my fingers lay across the other string. How do I stop them from doing that.

I started with just 3 fingers and the lower 3 strings.
After about 2 weeks my fingers were stronger.
My pinky finger when all 4 are on the 6th string,it sort of wants to lay on it's side but I just kept playing lke that and as time went by it was more like the rest of the fingers.
I watched the one girl who gives lessons here and noticed that her fingers do not come down straight on the strings but are slanted a bit.
I had to practice bringing my fingers straigt down because if you don't do it right it's hard to unlearn the wrong way.
