I swear this is the final time in my life for learning guitar.
So the story is:
Took lessons when I was 19. That lasted about a year.
Young, no money(a.k.a. cheap guitar), boring teacher.
Age 30, owned a pro audio shop, had a bit of money (a.k.a. better guitar), better teacher (studio guitarist Damian Smith).
Lasted about a year.
Owning your own business does not allow much free time.
So here I am at age 53. Purchased an acoustic for my wife on her b'day...she's a great pianist, & has said for over a year she wanted to learn guitar.
You guessed it. I started playing it and got the bug.
Oh, but now things are a bit different...there's this thing called the internet for lessons, I actually have some finances, and I have time! So with my recently purchased wine red Gibson Les Paul in hand, a strummin' I will go. Pray for me that I make it past 1 year!

I'm still going, and I've actually added a Fender Strat to the regiment.
I figure that since I hate "wasting" money, spending some on another "not cheap" guitar, forces me to not give up! I think I can...I think I can.... etc.

Good for you!!! Yes, a great story!

I have a strat and a les paul myself. You'll be able to cover a great range of tones with those two guitars! They are both great guitars!

This site is a gamechanger for guitar lessons. I really wanted to take lessons again since I'm primarily self taught and took lessons for only a year. With a full time job and 3 young kids, that just wasn't going to happen. Then I found this site. Over the past year and a half my playing has improved tremendously thanks to this site. I've learned about 10 or so songs and I've learned to improvise in a way I only dreamed I'd be able to one day. I also gained enough confidence to get involved with a band.

Guess what I'm trying to say if you've come to the right place :-).

Kannagt,

Your story is similar to mine. I took guitar lessons when I was 18 in high school. I did not stick a with it and ended up putting it away. About mid twenties I tried again for a year. About nine years ago gave it another go and put it away again. A couple of years ago I picked up the guitar again. I went thought some method books and YouTube before finding this site. Now I'm playing in a church band strumming away and my picking is getting better.

A few tips which helped me. Get a metronome! I cannot stress that enough and use it with every lesson and song. It builds timing, speed and accuracy. Another is learn songs. Short methods you learn from lessons are to build fundamentals. But putting that fundamental into a song will help. Also experiment with the lessons, try using different patterns, cords and fretting. Lastly take your time and enjoy learning and playing the guitar. It will come to you.

KannaGT,
Seems so many of us in the same boat. I got some really great advice that made
sense to me. Sometimes we fall off things cause we're disappointed with not
getting the results we hoped for. You have to love the process first. If you can love
boredom, tedium, and repitition of practice and plough through the results will
follow. If your too focused on results you'll fall away.. love the process.

All the best with your playing,

amped05, that is solid advice I'll be sure to keep in mind.

I'm in a similar situation (will post my intro shortly). Thanks for the perspective.
