Trouble with the F chord
I am in the middle of learning a song and have a great deal of difficulty with the f chord. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hi rac27,
Questions regarding F-chord are probably the most asked questions on this forum.
Just a tip for future questions: Try using the search-function on this forum (the small red bar with control panel, FAQ, search etc.) There are a lot of subjects that already have answered forumthreads.
Anyway, regarding your question:
Check out this exentisive thread on the barre chords and F-chord: http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31247
This is also usually a video I recommend regarding this subject:

Above all it takes a lot of practice and patience to build up the necessary strengh for your finger to hold the bar without muting any of the strings. It took me more than a year to be able to play the F-chord well. When you are just starting out you probably won't be able to play it perfectly in the first month when playing a song or other chord progression.
Hope that helps.
JJ

1st finger 1st fret 1st &2nd string 2nd finger 2nd fret G string 3rd finger 3rd fret D string. also an Fmaj 7 works well in the key of C same except let the high E ring open, super easy change from aC

Barre chords can be tricky, and can take a while to get used to.
If your problem is with the barred 1st finger, try to tilt the finger slightly towards the nut. The finger should not be flat down. Also, try and ease pressure of the middle of the finger, only the 6th, 2nd and 1st strings need to sound clear, as you fret the other strings with the other fingers.
If your problem is the other fingers, practice an open E Major chord, but switch your 1st finger for 2nd finger, your 2nd finger for 3rd, and your 3rd finger for 4th. This will allow you to get used to the finger positions of the 6th string major barre chord.
