It's sad that you're experiencing this. I've never experienced it myself, but I know that if anyone stole my gear, I'd become a far less pleasant person to be around. I honestly think there's one thing that sounds weird (and fishy) about this whole gear-theft. Didn't the police look for fingerprints on door handles and windows? Or any other evidence of someone unwanted entering the house, for that matter? Where I live, that's usually the first thing that happens when someone reports a break-in, while the owners of the house are being questioned for details.

Have you had anyone over for a visit lately, while your gear has been standing visibly? Unless you are 100% sure that they're innocent, consider asking them where they were at the time when the theft took place. I've known way too many people who's been robbed by people they trusted. Just make sure to ask them indirectly, and if they say they were with someone else, get that person (or those people to confirm it). You don't want to ask them directly, as that would make them realize you're suspecting them of. something, and you'd get nothing but a lie. If the police won't do what they can to help get your gear back, you can at least find out for yourself where everyone you know were.

I hope you get your stuff back soon. The sooner you get it back, the sooner you can start playing again.
