Ok, I see all these videos of the teachers showing us how to play the chords but I find myself pausing the video and counting strings to see exactly where to put my finger. I'm a total beginner!

Do you also check for TAB below the lesson? Usually chord diagrams can be found there. There's nothing wrong though with just pausing the video like you're doing, and figuring out what exactly the chord shape is... working it out like that helps cement it in your memory! Make sure you know all the chords for any given lesson... when I took the fingerpicking course, I would usually first watch the whole lesson through without playing the guitar. If Lisa says "this song is going to use the chords Am, F, C, G and Em.." I would make sure I knew how to fret those chords properly before proceeding with the lesson. Divide and conquer. Keep at it! :)

Also don't be afraid to use the looping feature. Using the A key, you can specify the beginning of a loop and the B key to specify the end of the loop. Once set, the video will loop between those two points until you tell it not too.

I use this all of the time for tricky (to me anyway) parts. It's one of the great things about learning this way - you don't have to feel self concious about having something repeated to you 100 times!

...and don't forget the GT Ultimate Chord Finder (top right corner of any GT page).

Don't forget the Fundamental lessons 1 & 2 under the Core Learning.
Here's a sample from Fundamental 2.

If you scroll down you'll see a photo of finger placement.
Like John pointed out to using the chord finder, but the lessons teach you how to do chords properly to change from one chord to another.

Hi johns 3962, I still, at times pause the vids to get the finger position right.
How much practice you put in can also have an effect. It may sound obvious but it's down to 'muscle memory', the more you practice the easier it will become. Hang in there & enjoy.

Sometimes I don't play chords I just move (left hand) from chord to chord.
And I make myself say the chord, lite pressure if my fingers are sore, that let's me practice longer.
