Try to make a conscious effort to be lighter with your strumming. You want the pick to glide over the strings. Don't dig in too far. Keep your arm, hands & fingers free of tension. The longer you work with your picking lightly, gradually it will become automated. But the more you practice at it without using a lighter touch the more you are simply training your brain & hands to play too heavily.
