I am a complete novice at guitar playing but am thoroughly enjoying it. Can anyone give me advice on a device which I can use for either bass or drum backing to my strumming of popular music? Is there perhaps a site for backing tracks of midi files? Thanks

A lot of fx pedals have built in drum machines, I have Zoom gfx 707, should cost about $250, I live in England so thats just a rough conversion. But along with havin 32 preset sounds it does have a drum machine on. It has about 10 different styles on it and you can change to bpm too.

Yeah, I second the motion. FruityLoops is an awesome program. The only trouble can be figuring out how to use it. It's not exactly the most intuitive program out there, but once you get used to it, the results can be amazing.

I own the Boss Dr. Rhythym Section, its great for backing tracks. It has instruments up the ass, and its somewhat easy to program. I think it costed about 350.00. I havnt used it in a year tho, ive just been downloading midi tracks instead. Yes, im lazy as HELL. But if your not, it kicks ass!
