are many ways.. http://www.amptone.com is very good [esp check the links], the site pstring mentions in the places to go section, http://www.guitarnuts.com for guitar wiring

and if you do a search on google for the specific topic your after[eg how does a wah pedal work] you can get some good results.
To go after the specific question you ask,well, i've not got all the way there myself yet but it is the order and combinations of valves,chips,resistors and capacitors[etc,etc] which give any circuit it's "tonal signature".

I guess that to find out the answer you'd probably have to get a certificate in electronic engineering/circuit design!
so probably the best bet is to get a book on audio electronic projects,or a 130 IN 1 Electronics Lab or similar project "bank" (as these go some way to helping one to understand how the components interact), and work up from there.
