You are in luck... I have just the book for you. Its called "The Fretboard Workbook". Its an MIT book that you can buy on Amazon. You'll also want to get some fretboard paper... you can buy it pretty cheap on-line from Guitar Center. Don't bother trying to make your own fretboard paper... for the hassle its just easier to buy a couple of pads that will keep you going for a long time.
The book will ask you to play through some exercises, but you can skip that if you have to. Its a great book... I think its just what you're looking for. It starts very basic and builds up slowly. I found it really helpful.
Get well!

I wish you a speedy recovery!
Guitar Fundamentals 2 starts with a basic music theory primer.
www.guitartricks.com/course.php?input=2
And this is my intro to music theory tutorial.
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=495
There are two tutorials that focus on modes:
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=370
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=770
I understand that you might be unable to play guitar for a while. And it's admirable that you want to use your recovery time productively. And studying theory is a great way to do this! But keep this very important point in mind: you still need to use your ears.
Even if you aren't moving your fingers, you still need to keep connecting your ears to you mind.
Sometimes people study theory as an isolated pursuit, separated from the sounds. I've seen it result in students that can name every note, scale, chord, mode & inversion. But since they only studied in "on paper", they can't identify the sound of those things when they hear them.
The moral to the story is to always find a practical application for your theory. A concept that doesn't point to an actual concrete is worse than useless.
With that in mind, listen to the various lessons & work on memorizing the sounds in order to associate them with the concepts. Learn the scale formulas & the interval patterns of the modes, but also learn to identify them by sound. This is called ear training (or sometimes, aural training).
You can do this with the GT scale finder & chord finder, since it plays the pitches for you! You can also do this with this nifty site that has great ear training exercises:
http://www.musictheory.net/lessons
http://www.musictheory.net/exercises
About halfway down the page are some great ear training exercises! Have fun & speedy recovery!

I'm not sure which lesson you are referring to here. Can you reply with a lesson number or link to the lesson page, please? If there is an error I want to make sure we get it fixed! Thanks!
