Wow, I can only imagine what that experience must have been like for you. It's good that you found something to keep your spirits up and press on. (and to give you something to do!)
A strap is a good way to go, it keeps the guitar close to your chest and draws your arms and hands in a little closer for easy movement around the guitar. (That's why you'll see a lot of jazz guys or super-shredders with the guitar strung high.)
