you could pick up a Squier Telecaster with a humbucker in the bridge position and you should be able to use that for the heavier music you want to play and a single coil pick up in the neck position for the blues stuff...

10 years ago, I remember seeing a band whose lead guitarist played a red Telecaster. They played a variety of hard rock - rush, van halen, kiss, stone temple pilots, pink floyd. He had no problem rockin' with it.
