I've had a guitar for about 35 years but have not applied myself. I would play with it a little bit then put it away for months or years.

In the last month I've been hard at it trying to learn how to play. I know the major chords and can play a little bit but I decided that I needed some help. I subscribed to GuitarTricks last week. I will probably be here asking a few questions from time to time.

Welcome to the site Cecil! The lessons are great, and you can also ask the instructors questions, but you have to be patient as sometimes it takes a while for them to answer. To "apply yourself", make some goals, then move directly towards them. So for instance, if your goal is to have a better general understanding of the guitar, go through the fundamentals courses. But if you want to simply learn a specific song, and that's what makes you happy & motivated to practice, then just go for that (you can always do both if you have the time). Take some time out each day, even if its just for 2 minutes, to just experiment without self-judgement and use what you know to come up with your own ideas.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply and encouragement.

I have been enjoying the site for the last week.

I've been trying to learn a song and have been practicing a couple of hours a day. It sure is taking a long time to get this but I do like to practice so it's OK. I don't expect to become a pro but would like to get good enough to play for family and friends from time to time.
