BURST!
I was wondering how someone customizing a guitar, like i am doing with my guitar would go about making a burst finish on the guitar. I want it to be Midnight Burst, the blue in the center fading into black on the edges. The thing with Burst is i dont think you can use regular blue paint, cause when somthing has a burst color you can see the woodgrain through the color... Help me out please.

All I know is they use a lacquer and a spray gun. I think it is usually a tinted lacguer. Those paint jobs would be hard to do unless you have experience doing that kind of thing. I would love to refinish my axe in basic black but I don't think I'll try it myself.

Sorry, must of gotten caught up in the moment. Hey does anybody have any tips for refinishing a guitar. Like with just a black finish. I have an air compressor and a spray gun, but I just don't think I have the "cajones'" to try it.

Oh and don't worry, I can take a good bagging now and then, especially if I deserve it. :)

About the black finish, i'd go to sherwin williams for paint, i wouldn't use any Wal-Mart special sale paint. Dont spray it on thick, just fog it in a few times in a day. Stand back away from the guitar, then spray it may take a wile but it's better. I can paint a guitar solid, and make it look good but not stain it. Oh Yah make sure you use some 400grit sandpaper on the original paint or finish before painting or it wont stick. Dont spray any W-D40 anywhere near it before you paint it and, Clear coat it when you're done.

UM, Ok, I'm biulding a guitar at the mo, and looking around for paints etc etc, now, I dont think you can use normal house paints for example .... I dont think you need to use certain paints, I mean you could get away with it suppouse, but Cellulose laquers are pretty popular which are used on guitar.
About spraying, just go get an airbrush art book, it'll tell you about the basics, which are universal...

I have never sprayed lacquer so it would probably be a good idea to practice on a 2x4 before I try it on my axe. My wife has a couple of airbrushes. Do you think that would do a better job than my big old paint gun?

Hey Tommy9, I like someone who is not afraid to jump in the deep end of the pool, here's a few sites that might help you out, http://www.reranch.com http://www.stew-mac.com
a couple of tips, proper preparation prevents poor performance, do not get in a hurry, wait 30 days before you rub out the finish, and 2 more weeks before you put it back together, and lastly, finishing a guitar is the hardest thing to do well, Good Luck!
BTW, what kind of wood/top is this guitar made of?
