How To Play "Dead Notes"?

Well, that's what my tab guide says they're called -- "Dead note refers to muting the strings with your left hand. Dead note effect is achieved by lightly resting your left hand across the strings without actually pressing the strings against the fret."

I have a feeling on Guitar Tricks it's called something else, because I can't find anything through the search engine using that terminology.

Is there a lesson available here that covers this topic?
