On the flip side I used to know a guy that had a '58 gold top Paul. Probably one of the most "butt-ugly" paint jobs in history, but geez did that thing ever have that honest to goodness Les Paul "punch. The newer ones have nothing that comes close to sounding like that.
I really wish that we lived in a time when your best quality was considered "standard." Sadly, those days are gone.
I all but refuse to look at new basses/guitars now.
