Very valid point and good advice David! Students sometimes complain of getting bored with the basics, then jump ahead to try and learn a song, only to get frustrated because they lack the required skills.
The way to avoid this trap is to have a clear goal, a "destination" if you will, of where you are going with your playing. For instance, lets say you decide you want to be able to play finger-style acoustic guitar, and your goal is to be able to play Lisa McCormick's theme song "Its Never Too Late". As you suggest, start from the beginning of her course, with a clear understanding that you are learning the simpler stuff as a means to an end in order to play the theme song. This way, whenever you're finding the process a bit challenging, or wishing you were moving forward faster, you can remind yourself of your goal, and be assured that by following her lessons, you will get there.
