I don't know any teachers but I wanted to see if you have a strat. Knopfler has a signature tone and if you have that sound, you're halfway there.

Another thing to consider it that Knopfler was known for not using his pick, but instead using his thumb finger-nail. His sound wasn't very heavy or over-driven for most of his music, though "Money For Nothing" and "Brothers in Arms" are notable exceptions. For his more classic style, like "Sultans of Swing" or "Telegraph Road", the picking style is going to be a quintessential part of his sound. To emulate that heavily picked sound, you may want to change the way you hold your pick, so that the angle as it strikes the string is more aggressive. The other thing is to try and get your thumb in there too, very much like a pinch harmonic. That should help emulate his style a bit more.

No I do not have a Strat. But, I play finger style having a basic classical guitar background. I am just getting back into playing having been not playing for over 30 years.

Now A Strat is not what Knopfler just uses. He also use different other axes. Note most of his mellower sounds come from a LP which I do have.

Ty for your respose fellow players, but with all of the songs the teachers have on this site, I am suprised they have no Dire Strait or Knopflers ones.

Just curious... what aspects of Mark's style appeals most to you? His tone? His phrasing? The chords he uses on rhythm?

If you can't find it here, try youtube. That's about as close as you're going to get for one place that has it all in an imperfect world.

A Mark Knopfler artist study, now that would be something to have here on GT.
Maybe that's something we should suggest for futur lessons.

Edit: Oops I think I'm the only full access on this topic so far. Oh well... Maybe that could be something that would get you guys to become full access members ?

Sultans of Swing would be awesome! It would be a lot to learn though...lots of different guitar work in there.

I love Mark Knoffler's music! He uses a lot of really cool country licks, very bluesy sounding. Probably my favorite guitarist .I'm learning "Down to the Waterline" right now from a local teacher. If this site were to do a 'Knoffler style" lesson or two, it would prompt me to become full subscribing member. Any songs from the original Dire Straights album are full of advanced techniques. That man can bend a string!!!
