I'd recommend starting at the core lessons. I found some of the coolest stuff in the most basic lessons, and learning some theory makes a world of difference trying to understand what I'm doing and in communicating with other musicians. I find it difficult to get ideas back and forth with someone who has no background at all. I'm currently revisiting a lot of stuff with a new appreciation!
I'd say you don't need to get yourself "mired in it", but with some basic understanding, I was able to start applying and gradually learning more as it made more sense combined actually learning more tunes. Good luck!
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.
