Low volume, intermittent signal - Probably a lose wire or connection somewhere. The volume going in and out is probably being caused by the movement of the guitar rather than the actual output of the notes you're playing. When you strum harder you're moving the guitar about more. Makes me think you probably have a loose connection somewhere. Check the leads to the switch and to the neck pickup volume and tone pots...
