I know this should probably go somewhere else in this forum, like say technique or theory or whatever, but the open discussion has the most viewers(check it out for yourself),which translates to more chances of my question getting answered as well as being answered by more people who know more stuf......
The CAGED system:
I gather this is a system of reading/understanding chords.I saw some website that sells lessons online going on about it's virtues.....I've just read an interview with Kelly Richey, and she's praising it too.
So,who knows about it?Is it what it's said to be?If I wanted to learn it(actuallt the if isn't there,I want to),where can I do that?Preferably for free?;)
Help me out.
And in case you're interested, you can read that Kelly Richey interview, here it is:

I know king david, ...learn the open chords C..A..G..E...D, in open position and there respective scale patterns. Find all the inversions of C major triad up the neck to 12 fret, and meditate on the similarities.

There is a book called scales over chords by I think John Savage or something it outlines the concept very well and is only about 20$ american.

I already know the open chords amd stuff.I'll try what you say, then see if I can ,ake anything out of it.I'll also e-mail the lady who conducted the interview I mentioned and see if she can help.I'll also ask another guy who writes for the same website.he might know.
And Christoph, now that the thread has moved, what was on your mind?
And I think I hadn't thought about this, but maybe posting in Theory to begin with would have been a good idea, coz, tho fewer pple come here, those who do are more likely theory inclined, and hence more likely to know these things.
I'll remember that next time.

Well, since you asked, CAGED is a system of scale fingerings. There are five patterns that interlock across the fretboard (the lydian and locrian are left out as root notes). As opposed to the "three notes per string" system, which requires you to stretch your pinky out for the third note, the CAGED system uses a principle of one finger per fret. In other words, the CAGED scale patterns can all be played in the space of five frets or less (you have to shift up or down one fret sometimes).

Here's what I mean -

G Aeolian (CAGED)

E - 3 - 5 6 -
B - 3 4 - 6 -
G 2 3 - 5 - -
D - 3 - 5 - -
A - 3 - 5 6 -
E - 3 - 5 6 -

G Aeolian (Three note)

E - - - 5 6 - 8
B - - 4 - 6 - 8
G - 3 - 5 - 7 -
D - 3 - 5 - 7 -
A - 3 - 5 6 - -
E - 3 - 5 6 - -

So, as you can see, it's the same exact scale, just a different way of visualizing it. Some people prefer one over the other, but I've found that each has it's uses. The Three-Note is great for shredding, because you don't have to change your rhythm (it's always 3 notes per string). CAGED is perfect for chords and arpeggios.

Does that help?

The "CAGED" System is a system for deriving fingerings and positions used most notably by famous jazz guitar player, Joe Pass. The acronym "CAGED" stands for the the roots of the basic open position major chords: C, A, G, E, D. Basically, you use these chord forms as a point of reference for playing various other chords or scale patterns across the guitar neck. For example, play a 'C' chord using the 5 finger patterns (the C,A,G,E and D open chord forms). You will have to move these patterns from their original position to get all 5 'C' chord forms. You can refinger these garden variety chords using your index finger as a barre:

(C Form) -- start at the 12th fret
(A Form) -- start at the 3rd fret
(G Form) -- start at the 5th fret
(E Form) -- start at the 8th fret
(D Form) -- start at the 10th fret

You could use these basic forms to play in any key over the span of the guitar neck. Using the 'C' chord example above, you could derive 5 sets of finger patterns for the Major scale that roughly correspond to the positioning of these basic chord forms. Likewise, you can build other simple or more complex chords from the 5 basic chord forms. It mainly gives you a frame of reference when you play.Joe Pass discusses this system in his instructional books and videos. Check out the book, "Joe Pass -- on Guitar"

by cold I mean "without thought" or by refex "like the back of your hand", pure instict, automatic, like walking. When this state of mind is attained freedom of improvisation occurs in spontaneous beauty.
