The number of pickups give you more tonal options. I have guitars that have three pickups, some that have two pickups and some that have one pickup. It really is all personal preference.

The three pickups would be Neck, Middle, Bridge due to their locations on the body of the guitar. Neck being the pickup that is closest to the neck of the guitar, the bridge being the pickup that is closest to the bridge of the guitar and the middle... Well that's easy.

Me, I kind of like a simple guitar, one pickup (bridge position), one volume control.
