First and only time I saw Led Zeppelin was in New-York City in 1988. The place was Madison Square Gardens, the event was Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary.

They played at the end of a 12 hour event which featured the who's who of music on the Atlantic label.

With the young Jason Bonham on drums, Page Plant and Jones did their best with some tradtional numbers. They were not on top of their game, Plant's voice was off, Page was nervous and his playing was very stiff.

But you know what, nobody cared, its was Led Zeppelin, the gods of rock! Thats all that mattered,

Wish I had seen them in their glory days, but at least this memory to keep.

Itchin' to play,

Izzy

I read that Zeppelin were pretty disappointed with their performance at that show, Izzy. But you're right—you got to see them live. So many people I know have never had that opportunity. I am of the same mind as you: any Zeppelin show is a great show. Even seeing Celebration Day in the theater last year was a kick. I saw the band back in 1975. I had tickets to their 1977 tour, but the dates were cancelled. And that was that. Still holding out hope for my second chance.

I look for the next band to come down the pike who will make such an impact. It would be thrilling to be part of something so immense and exciting in music again.

wildwoman1313, I'm not talking about the contributions Led Zeppelin made. I'm talking about the boast of them being the "best band in the world" and "no one has ever been able to top them". I have not disputed any "significant contributions" that Led Zeppelin has made... I didn't say anything about that at all. Sorry for the confusion, I thought my comments were pretty clear.

Lead Belly was definitely one of greats on the 12-string, Eric, which he demonstrates on his version of "The Gallis Pole." For anyone who's not heard Lead Belly's take on this traditional song, check it out here. Jimmy Page does indeed take a cue from Lead Belly, playing the 12-string on Zeppelin's version of the song, which they renamed "Gallows Pole." Here's a clip of Plant and Page playing the song live.

Glad you liked the article, Eric and Jamieson. Thanks to both of you for your comments.
