If ya mean copying a solo off a CD or whatever... I'll usually break the solo up into sections and work on each part. If it's really difficult I'll set my CD player to repeat the solo endlessly.. do a basic copy of the background music in midi or time stetch it to slow it down. (course ya used to be able to use 16rpm speed but nooo...somebody had to invent the CD)
If I'm really stuck I'll search the web for any tabs available.

I have never been able to play a solo note for note, as hard as I tried to play it...

Break it up in smal sections. Lets say that the solo is about 30 seconds long, divide it in 10 sec. It lot easyer than to learn it whole at once and by the way, when you are at the end you´ll probably will forget the beggining.

But I´m not a right guy to tell you how to learn a solo actually ´cause I never do it. I usualy learn it so it sounds "somthing like that" wich means lots of own stuff combined with orginal. It makes it more fun to play afterwards and lot easyer to learn and develop my own style.

It's like I was built to improvise. Let's take poetry, it's as if I could only learn the first two words of the verses, and then I get off and create another poem with the same rhymes as the original one...
I have tried to play guns and roses solos when I was 15, but I would never get it right, so I just played what I heard in my head (if there's anything in my head, as Allan HOLDSWORTH put it) I have the chance to be able to sing (in my head) pretty much anything along to a progression, and I have developed a tight relationship to the guitar that allows me to play it almost right most of the time.
I would suck in a cover band!! But it's fine for what I do...
