Hmm, I think music is an expression of feelings, and those can be all kinds of feelings. Love, hate, pain, anger, joy, etc... So, I don't think it's only pain that drives people to make music.
Though I have to agree, my creativity reaches peaks everytime I go through something ****ty. Maybe it's cause I have been happy lately that I haven't been writing anything, hehe.
