EQ...Think subtractively. What frequency must go on a guitar or bass drum track to allow the bass guitar to 'breath' through. We, I think, hear a great drum sound from a fave artist and want all of our bass drums to sound like that....that kind of thing. Your mix is its own deal so you have to look not at what you're sacrificing when doing subtractive EQ but what maximizes the overall affect of the track.
