I am a fairly new player... I have been playing for a few months and had no problem learning Heart Shape Box and About a girl by Nirvana in matter of days... But the solo in "In Bloom" is really getting to me... Even though it's classified as level 3 guitars, should I be struggling that much?

Thanks.

Imo, I find it sort of hard for your level. I suggest that you just take it slow :) I assure you, you'll get it.

Hi Grecci,

Well don't get discouraged at all because everyone has those things when learning guitar that are easier for them and other things that are more difficult for them. It really differs from person to person.

Seems that you really find strumming songs like 'About a Girl' easy to play, and have a bit more hard time to play some leads. Since you only have been playing for a couple of months I suggest you take it slowly and a comfortable speed, and keep practicing. I'm sure you'll eventually get there.

I myself couldn't strum properly at all when I started out with guitar. I nicknamed myself 'mister irregular robot arm' and thought I could never get it down. But as long as you practice hard and slowly those things will get better. And look at me now, I can pick up the strumming pattern when I hear it!

I don't know what you're struggling with specifically but since the 'In Bloom' solo has a lot of bends maybe it would be a good idea to practice those and also picking out notes on single and few strings.

Hope that helps

JJ

Don't worry man. The only thing you need is practice, practice, practice!

In my oppinion the solo in ''in bloom'' is really poor. But if you like it :) it's all good. You will get it in no time champ.

As the great Tommy Emmanuel said, "you first learn to crawl, then to walk, then you can run and then you can fly". You just started playing so be patience with yourself

I had this problem when I was learning the solo in Dead Skin Mask by Slayer. What I did was I dropped the tempo down drastically, I'm talkin like 80 BPM (painfully slow) then took it lick by lick. Before learning a new lick I would get the fingering of it memorized to the point that it was muscle memory. Once you get the muscle memory down, increase the tempo in small increments, like by 5 or 10 BPM until it gets to the point that you can barely do it, then go back down to a slower level again. Keep pushing yourself to that "breaking point" but dont go past it. If you keep doing that it will help ALOT with getting that solo up to speed. I've even pushed it past the song speed a few times, just to make the actual speed seem slower and easier to play, so you should consider doing that too. Also something that really helps is listening to the solo while you try to play along, because that can help with the way that the notes are played.

I would amend Tommy to say: "you first learn to crawl, then to walk, then you can run and then you can fly...then you decide you want to start learning another style and recall what that crawling time was like..."
